For several centuries, rushlights were a common source of artificial light for lower classes as they were extremely inexpensive to make.
By soaking a dried plant called a 'rush' in fat or grease, and placing it on the lamp, it would burn, forming a makeshift light source.
This lovely rustic piece is made from wrought iron and measures 20cm in height.
